The Friendly Nations Visa: Complete Guide for 2026
February 20, 2026
Everything you need to know about Panama's most popular residency pathway for Americans, Canadians, and Europeans — including real costs and timelines.
What Is the Friendly Nations Visa?
The Friendly Nations Visa (FNV) is Panama's most popular permanent residency program for citizens of over 50 countries — including the USA, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Spain, and most of the EU.
It was originally designed to attract professionals and entrepreneurs from countries with strong diplomatic and economic relationships with Panama.
Who Qualifies?
Citizens of the qualifying 50 countries who meet one of the following:
1. Professional employment — Working for a Panamanian company
2. Economic solvency — Maintaining a Panamanian bank account with $5,000+ balance (typically)
3. Real estate ownership — Owning property in Panama (this is the most common route for investors)
The Step-by-Step Process
*Step 1: Gather documents in your home country*
- •Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity)
- •Police clearance certificate (apostilled)
- •Birth certificate (apostilled)
- •Marriage certificate if applicable (apostilled)
*Step 2: Hire a Panamanian immigration attorney*
Do not skip this step. The FNV process requires a licensed Panamanian attorney. Budget $2,500–$5,000 in legal fees depending on complexity.
*Step 3: Open a Panamanian bank account*
This is often the hardest step for non-residents. Banks that currently work with non-residents include Multibank and Banistmo. You'll need your foreign documents, proof of income, and often a reference letter from your home bank.
*Step 4: Submit your application*
Your attorney submits to the National Immigration Service (SNM). You'll receive a provisional residency card (carné provisional) while the application is processed.
*Step 5: Permanent residency*
Typically granted within 2–6 months. The permanent residency is valid indefinitely and comes with a cedula (Panamanian ID).

| Bank account requirement | $5,000+ (stays in your account) |

Timeline depends heavily on your home country's apostille process and your attorney's caseload.
Important Caveats
**We are not immigration attorneys.** This guide is educational only. Requirements change frequently. Always consult a licensed Panamanian immigration attorney before starting any residency process.
The FNV program has undergone multiple changes in recent years. In 2021, the economic solvency requirement changed significantly. Requirements may change again. Verify current requirements with your attorney.
